How much do solar panels cost in Colombia?

There is no single price: it depends on your consumption, your roof and the equipment. Here are reference ranges to orient you before requesting real quotes.

Quick answer

As a market reference in Colombia (July 2026), a residential solar system usually falls between 7 and 42 million pesos depending on its size (from 1.5 to 10 kWp), which works out at an order of 4.2 to 4.7 million pesos per installed kWp. Commercial and industrial projects are quoted by installed capacity. The factor that weighs most is the size of the system in kilowatts peak (kWp), which is set from your monthly consumption. These are indicative ranges: the real price only comes from a quote for your case.

How to read these numbers

They are reference ranges to give context, not an offer. Anyone promising you a firm price without seeing your bill and your roof is doing marketing, not quoting. We are working to replace these ranges with a price index built from aggregated real quotes.

The metric that matters

Compare per kWp, not by total

Two quotes with very different totals can be equivalent, and two with similar totals may not be at all. The only way to know is to divide the investment by the proposed capacity and compare the result: pesos per installed kilowatt peak.

That ratio neutralises the variable that most distorts the comparison, which is size. An installer proposing 6 kWp and another proposing 4 kWp are not quoting the same thing even if they are talking about the same house; if the first is more expensive in total but cheaper per kWp, the conclusion flips.

A detail that gets overlooked: the cost per kWp falls with scale. Part of the budget — design, mobilisation, commissioning, legalization — is practically the same for 2 kWp as for 8 kWp. That is why a small system almost always works out proportionally more expensive, and it is not a sign that you are being overcharged.

With the ratio in hand, the next check is that both proposals include the same things. A low price per kWp stops being low if it excludes legalization, a structure suited to your roof or a reasonable installation warranty.

Where the money goes

The relative weight of each line item explains why certain apparent savings turn out expensive and why scale improves the unit cost.

Photovoltaic modules

The largest single line item

It is the only thing that scales almost linearly with capacity. If you double the kWp, you double this line.

Inverter and protections

Second largest line item

Its price does not grow proportionally with size: a 5 kW inverter does not cost twice as much as a 2.5 kW one.

Mounting structure and installation

Varies with the roof

It is the line item with the widest spread between quotes. Clay tile, sheet metal and flat slab do not cost the same, nor does a hipped roof compared with a flat one.

Labour and engineering

Weight decreases with scale

The design, the calculation report and the commissioning have a fixed component. That is why the cost per kWp falls on larger systems.

Legalization and paperwork

Almost fixed cost

Practically the same effort for 2 kWp as for 8 kWp, which is why it weighs far more on a small system.

Batteries, if included

Can rival everything else

Storage is the decision that most changes the budget. It is justified by backup, not by extra savings.

The weight is expressed as a position within the budget rather than as a percentage on purpose: a percentage would imply a measurement these reference ranges do not support.

What moves the price of your installation

System size (kWp)

It is the main factor. The greater the capacity, the greater the total investment, although the cost per watt usually falls on larger systems.

Roof type and condition

A complex roof, one in poor condition or one that is hard to access makes the mounting structure and the labour more expensive.

Quality of panels and inverter

Branded equipment with better warranties costs more, but reduces the risk across 25 years.

Batteries

Storage is optional and adds a significant cost. It is only justified for backup during outages or in areas without a grid.

Paperwork and legalization

Legalization with the grid operator and, for businesses, the UPME incentive certification, carry associated costs and timelines.

Red flags

When a low price is low because of what it leaves out

Almost no cheap quote is cheap through efficiency. It is usually cheap because it leaves out something you will have to pay for later.

  • A firm price given over the phone or WhatsApp, without seeing your bill or your roof
  • Estimated annual output with no statement of the irradiation or performance ratio used
  • A single “25-year warranty” figure without separating module, inverter and installation
  • No mention of whether legalization with the grid operator is included
  • Module and inverter brand and model missing, or “equivalent” without specifics
  • A large deposit demanded before the technical site visit
  • A promise to eliminate 100% of the bill, ignoring the fixed retail charge
  • Savings presented as a single figure rather than a range, without saying which tariff it starts from

Where these ranges come from

The ranges published on this page are our own, drawn from observing the Colombian market, and are presented as an indicative reference with a visible date. They are not a quote or an offer, and they do not come from a statistical sample we could publish.

We put it that way because the usual alternative — presenting a firm figure without saying where it comes from — is precisely what stops someone judging whether the number applies to their case. A range with a declared methodology is less eye-catching and more useful.

The stated goal is to replace this reference with the NodoSolar price index per kWp, built from aggregated, anonymized real quotes. While the sample is not large enough to publish something defensible, nothing is published: an index with four observations projects a rigour it does not have.

Why don't you publish an exact price?

Because a real price depends on your consumption, your roof, the city and the equipment chosen. Any 'firm' figure given without looking at your case is marketing, not a quote. We publish reference ranges to give you context and we help you obtain real, comparable quotes.

What does the price of an installation normally include?

It usually includes the panels, the inverter, the mounting structure, the wiring, the design, the installation, the commissioning and the processing of the connection with the grid operator. Batteries, structural reinforcement and subsequent maintenance are normally quoted separately.

How do I know whether a quote is expensive or cheap?

Compare the price per watt (COP per kWp), not just the total, and check that the proposals include the same things: brand and warranty of the equipment, scope of the installation and paperwork. A very low offer may be cutting corners on equipment quality or on the legalization process.

Does the price include legalization with the grid operator?

It should. Always ask for the proposal to state whether it includes processing the connection and net metering with your operator. It is a mandatory step and leaving it out is a common cause of cost surprises.

Why does the cost per kWp fall on larger systems?

Because part of the budget does not depend on size: the design, the calculation report, mobilising the crew, the commissioning and the legalization cost almost the same for 2 kWp as for 8 kWp. Spread across more capacity, the unit cost falls.

How much do batteries add to the project?

Enough to change the decision. Storage is the line item that most alters a residential budget and it generates no extra saving compared with a grid-connected system: its value lies in having power during an outage. It is worth assessing as a separate purchase, with its own justification.

Do tax incentives reduce the price the installer charges me?

Not directly. The benefits of Laws 1715 of 2014 and 2099 of 2021 — income tax deduction, VAT exclusion, accelerated depreciation — apply to a project certified with UPME and their effect depends on your tax situation. A household that does not file income tax does not benefit from them. Be wary of a proposal that presents them as already discounted from the price.

Is it worth waiting for prices to fall further?

Equipment costs have fallen steadily for years, but the energy tariff you pay while you wait also rises. Postponing the decision saves on the equipment and costs on the bill; which weighs more depends on your consumption. What is worth avoiding is buying in a rush because of an offer with an artificial deadline.

Does a more expensive system produce more energy?

Not necessarily. Two systems of the same capacity on the same roof produce practically the same, whatever the price. What the premium on high-end equipment buys is lower degradation, better warranties and manufacturer backing over twenty-five years: risk, not output.
