Power optimizer

Definition

A power optimizer is fitted to each panel to maximise its individual output and sends the energy to a central inverter. It is the middle alternative between a string inverter and microinverters, useful on roofs with partial shading.

The optimizer does not convert current: it conditions its panel's output so it works at its optimum point and decouples its performance from that of the other modules in the string. The conversion to alternating current still happens at a central inverter, so the system keeps an accessible main unit and adds lightweight electronics at each panel.

Against a plain string inverter, it brings tolerance to partial shading and panel-by-panel monitoring. Against microinverters, it is usually somewhat cheaper and keeps the power electronics concentrated in one place, but it retains the dependence on that central inverter: if it fails, all output stops.

Many optimizer systems work as a closed ecosystem: one manufacturer's optimizers require their own inverter. That constrains future replacement and expansion, and it is a legitimate question to ask before signing a quote.

Optimizer or microinverter?

Both solve the same problem — stopping one panel dragging the others down — with different architectures. The optimizer usually works out somewhat cheaper and concentrates the conversion in an accessible unit; the microinverter removes the single point of failure. The decision usually comes down to the manufacturer's ecosystem and the price of the specific proposal.

Do I need optimizers on every panel?

Not always. On some systems they are installed only on the modules affected by shade, while the rest work in a conventional string. It is a reasonable compromise when the shading problem is localised to a specific area of the roof.
