Peak power

Definition

Peak power is the maximum power a panel or system delivers under standard test conditions, expressed in watts peak (Wp) or kilowatts peak (kWp). It is the figure equipment is named, compared and quoted by.

When a panel is advertised as '550 W', those 550 are watts peak: what it would deliver with 1,000 W/m² of irradiance, a cell at 25 °C and the reference solar spectrum. It is a catalogue value, measured in a laboratory, that lets modules from different manufacturers be compared on the same yardstick.

In practice, real instantaneous power almost always comes in below that. Irradiance varies with the time of day and cloud cover, and cell temperature on a Colombian roof easily exceeds the 25 °C reference; since the capacity of a silicon panel falls slightly for every degree above that temperature, heat trims the output precisely during the sunniest hours. That gap between catalogue and reality is normal and is accounted for in the system's performance ratio.

A panel's datasheet also includes the power tolerance (the margin allowed against the nominal value) and the temperature coefficient. In hot climates, a better temperature coefficient — one less negative — matters as much as a few extra watts peak.

Does a 550 Wp panel always deliver 550 W?

No. It delivers 550 W only if the standard test conditions all hold at once, something that rarely happens on a real roof. With less irradiance it delivers less, and with a hot cell it delivers less still. That difference is not a defect: it is allowed for in the system's output calculation.

Is a panel with more watts peak better?

More watts peak per panel means fewer panels for the same total capacity, which helps when roof space is limited. But for output over 25 years, efficiency, the temperature coefficient and the manufacturer's warranties matter as much or more. Comparing on watts alone stays at the surface.
