Monocrystalline panel

Also known as: mono, monocrystalline silicon, black panel.

Definition

A monocrystalline panel is made with single-crystal silicon, which gives it higher efficiency and a uniform dark colour. It offers more capacity per square metre than polycrystalline, which is especially useful when roof space is limited.

The silicon is grown as an ingot of a single continuous crystal, with an internal structure free of grain boundaries. Electrons move with fewer obstacles, and that is where the higher efficiency comes from. The process is more demanding than for polycrystalline, but the scale of production has narrowed the cost difference so much that monocrystalline is today the standard option in the residential market.

Its practical advantage is not so much producing more energy per installed watt as concentrating more watts into less surface. On a small roof, that density can be the difference between covering the target consumption or falling short. Within the monocrystalline family there are variants — PERC, TOPCon, half-cut — that gain a few points of efficiency and behave better in heat.

When comparing quotes, both proposing monocrystalline panels does not make them equivalent: the brand, the declared efficiency, the temperature coefficient, the power tolerance and, above all, who answers for the warranty if a module fails in year ten all matter.

Where it is worth comparing prices is between monocrystalline brands and series, which vary considerably in efficiency and warranties.

How do I tell a monocrystalline panel by eye?

By the colour: monocrystalline has a black or very dark blue, uniform tone, while polycrystalline shows a streaked blue with a mottled look. Even so, the datasheet is the reliable reference; the colour can mislead depending on the glass's anti-reflective coating.
