Definition
A hybrid system combines a grid connection with batteries, so it can keep working during a power cut. It provides backup for priority loads, at a higher cost than an on-grid system without storage.
At its heart is a hybrid inverter, capable of managing panels, batteries and the grid at the same time, and of automatically isolating a backup circuit when the grid goes down. That detail matters: the backup usually does not feed the whole house, but a specific panelboard with the loads chosen as priorities — lighting, fridge, communications, a critical device — because sizing batteries for everything would send the cost soaring.
The underlying decision is what you are buying. In terms of pure savings, a hybrid performs worse than an equivalent on-grid system, because it adds the cost of the batteries without generating more energy. What it buys is continuity, and that is valued according to how much an outage costs: little in an urban home with a stable service, a lot in a clinic, a business with a cold chain or an area with frequent cuts.
If backup is not a need today but could be tomorrow, the sensible route is to leave the system prepared — a compatible inverter, space and protections allowed for — and add the batteries later, when the case justifies it.

How long does a hybrid system last during a blackout?
It depends on the usable capacity of the batteries and the consumption of the loads connected to the backup. With a few essential loads it can cover several hours or a whole night; and if there is sun the next day, the batteries recharge and the autonomy extends.
Is a hybrid worth it in a city with a good service?
Only if you value backup above economic return or if you have loads that cannot be interrupted. In an urban home with a stable service, an on-grid system gives a better return, and the premium for storage is justified more by peace of mind than by the numbers.
